    DLPA D-L Phenylalinine
    L-phenylalanine OR l-tyrosine is taken in the daytime on an empty stomach. Another alternative supplement is DLPA, or DL-phenylalanine. It contains two different forms of phenylalanine, which, besides providing the dopamine precursor, is believed to raise the level of PEA and inhibit endorphin-degrading enzymes, thus having the potential to reduce pain. A study found DLPA just as effective at reducing depression as the anti-depressant drug imipramine. The rate-limiting step in the synthesis of dopamine is in the conversion from l-tyrosine to l-dopa, and this conversion step is more “saturated” than the tryptophan conversion. So dopamine levels may be more difficult to influence using the amino acids l-phenylalanine and l-tyrosine. On the other hand, l-dopa, the most direct dopamine precursor, bypasses this rate-limiting step. L-dopa is only available by prescription and is called Levodopa. Sinemet is a medication which combines l-dopa with carbidopa and is most often employed in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.
    Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid and is found in most complete proteins. The DL form has been shown to reduce pain by blocking the breakdown of endorphins. Endorphins are one of the body’s natural pain killers. It also has slight appetite suppressive properties when taken on an empty stomach. Should not be taken by phenylketonurics as they do not have the enzyme needed to metabolize phenylalanine.
    D-L Phenylalinine (DLPA)
    D-L Phenylalinine (DLPA) is the key ingredient in this herbal formulation. DLPA is an essential amino acid called “phenylalinine”. This element is found naturally in some plants and animals. Phenylalinine is the precursor (parent substance) of tyrosine, and hence of dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine, all of which require Vitamins B6 and C for their biochemical conversion processes. This family of substances control, or affects, heart rate, and as a result blood pressure, oxygen consumption, blood sugar levels, fat metabolism, and several functions of the brain. In fact, phenylalinine will not be metabolized by the body without adequate Vitamin C available.
    Phenylalinine is also an essential acid required by the thyroid for normal function. Therapeutically, phenylalinine has been used effectively in several ways: as a pain control, as an antidepressant, to improve memory, concentration and mental alertness, to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, to reduce symptoms of multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease, and to treat the depigmentation of the skin condition – vitiligo.
    Phenylalanine is a key element (amino acid) in the effective treatment & control of bodily pain. “Pain” should be thought of as a clear warning from the body that there is a significant problem. Thus, simply obliterating pain, whether through medication or other means of pain control (i.e. acupuncture or electrical stimulation), without consideration as to ‘what’ the alarm indicates, is poor medicine. However, once the cause of the pain is identified and properly treated, it is clearly desirable to control, reduce, or eliminate the pain itself so as to allow for as much relief possible during the body’s healing process. Acupuncture, for example, and acupressure techniques achieve some level of effectiveness via stimulation of the release of natural internally-produced pain killers. These are known variously as endorphins and encephalins. Phenylalanine enhances pain relief by slowing down the breakdown of these body-produced pain relievers, giving them a much longer time to act. The psychological element is also very important in pain relief; the more anxious we are, then the greater we perceive the pain; the more relaxed we are, then the better we are able to deal with that same amount of pain. Therefore, a certain degree of pain will at different times be perceived as greater, or lesser, according to whether we are tense & anxious, or calm & relaxed. Fortunately, phenylalinine has also been shown scientifically to have a definite relaxing and calming action, thereby making it extremely effective in the overall relief of chronic or acute pain.
